Basic Info
Name:Jaganshi Hiei
Bio
Series: Yu Yu Hakusho

Character: Jaganshi Hiei

Timeline: Chapter 146; Upon entering the portal to the demon world after Yuusuke’s death

Personality: Above all, Hiei is arrogant, but he is also cruel, calculating, and stubborn. He is introduced into the series as a thief and that is usually what mindset he tries to default to even though during most of the series he is attempting to be absolved for these crimes. He is the type to do exactly the opposite of what he’s asked simply to prove that he won’t take orders, his own defiant, over-the-top brand of stubbornness born from a difficult life and a merciless past. This particular past has numbed him to death and destruction and has actually put him in the mood to cause such as often as he is able. He is capable of doing good, but he’ll generally refuse until he can come up with what he considers to be a viable reason to do so. Everything he does is for his own personal advancement and gain, or so he insists, even though his actions occasionally tell a different story than his words.

He has a growing fondness for Yuusuke, a solid respect for Kurama, and a bottomless store of insults available for Kuwabara. Despite his different opinions of each, he has begun to figure out how to deal with each and accept each in turn and would even run to Kuwabara’s aid if something were wrong. Not that he’d necessarily do anything once he got there. His sister Yukina and Urameshi Yuusuke are some of the only people alive who can bring out one of his rare, protective streaks, so such a surprising caring side of him does, in fact, exist. But such moments are few and far between, reserved only for those select few whom he doesn’t consider to be a nuisance. You shouldn’t expect any mercy when dealing with him. Ever.

Background: Hiei was born from the forbidden union of an ice maiden and a fire demon. The Koorime, ice maidens, isolate themselves from all other races because it’s believed that when they produce offspring with men, the resulting child is always a ruthless, cruel male who wouldn’t think twice of killing his own mother let alone anyone else. His twin sister, Yukina, was allowed to stay because she was of their kin, but Hiei was dropped from their floating home to fend for himself, if he even survived the fall.

He did survive and was raised by a band of thieves, his only pleasures throughout his childhood being to slaughter other demons to get stronger and the thought of taking revenge upon the race of women who’d exiled him. As he grew more powerful, the thieves who had raised him finally left him as well. He would spend a great deal of time looking at the small hiruiseki tear gem that his mother had cried for him upon his birth. At first when he did so, he’d been thinking about taking his revenge, but after a while he realized that looking into the hiruiseki would calm him and make him feel, for just a moment, a little bit happy. During one particular fight, however, he lost it. He finished off his enemy and went back to try to find the precious item, but he couldn’t.

Now with two things he had to find, he went to the surgeon Shigure with the intention of getting a jagan implant. Shigure agreed, but the payment was that if Hiei was ever able to find his sister Yukina he couldn’t tell her that he was her brother. The surgery sucked his power from him, and while he’d been born an A class demon, he was then reduced to a low D class. Shigure taught him some sword play while he recovered so that he would be able to defend himself even with his drastic fall in youki. With the jagan it was easy to find the home of the Koorime, but what he found was a miserable place, and when his mother’s friend Rui, the one who had thrown him from their home, asked him to take his revenge and kill her, he lost the will to do so.

Unable to find Yukina in the Makai, he left for the Ningenkai, the human world. While he was searching for her, he met Minamino Shuuichi, also known as Kurama. They defeated a demon, but for Hiei the demon ended up being nothing but a dead end. He asked Kurama’s name, saying he’d make an effort to remember it. And he did remember it when a couple of years later he asked him to help with stealing three of Reikai’s treasures. They succeeded, but Urameshi Yuusuke was put on the case as a spirit detective. Yuusuke killed their third partner, and Kurama dismissed himself from the alliance, but Hiei used his own artifact to threaten Yuusuke’s close friend Keiko in an attempt to get back the other two items. He failed thanks to an unexpected use of strategy on Yuusuke’s part and was defeated.

He and Kurama were offered amnesty, however, in exchange for helping Yuusuke and his spiritually aware friend Kuwabara Kazuma with his next assignment, to battle the four Saint Beasts. Upon entering the Saint Beasts’ castle, they were tested by the Gate of Betrayal. Hiei, who was the fastest among the four, was asked by Yuusuke to pull the lever needed to save them. For a moment, it appeared Hiei would leave them there to die, but in the end he pulled the lever, claiming that it was only because he might need their help. Kurama defeated the first, and Kuwabara defeated the second. Or so they thought until when they had confronted the third Saint Beast, the second arrived, injured and pleading for help. Seiryuu, the third Saint Beast, killed him. Hiei, for reasons perhaps even he didn’t fully understand, was furious at this development and promptly sliced through him sixteen times so quickly that none of his teammates had seen more than seven or eight of the swings.

After the Saint Beasts’ defeat, Hiei was entrusted with the task of delivering Yuusuke’s next assignment, a compromise made by Reikai because it dealt with Hiei’s sister. Hiei did not participate in the assignment until the end, when he stopped the man who had kidnapped and tortured Yukina from running away with her. When she asked who he was, he said only that he was a friend of Yuusuke and Kuwabara.

Shortly thereafter, Hiei and Kurama were invited to fight on Urameshi Yuusuke’s team in the Ankoku Bujutsukai, the Dark Tournament. Refusal meant death, and so after a period of training the four of them as well as a fifth “Masked Fighter” set out to win in order to keep their lives. During the tournament, Hiei increased his youki exponentially. His first fight was against a fellow fire demon, but Hiei used the Ensatsu Kokuryuuha and sacrificed his right arm to summon a dragon of Makai flames that disintegrated his opponent. For several fights after that, he was handicapped, his energy too low to call the same attack again and his arm itself nearly useless. But necessity is the mother of invention, and knowing that he wasn’t strong enough to defeat the man who had invited them to the tournament, the younger of the Toguro brothers, he separated himself from the others for a short while and essentially forced his arm and his dragon into submission.

During the Ankoku Bujutsukai finals, he told Yuusuke he could take on Toguro because he had killed his teacher Genkai, and Hiei fought against Bui. Not wanting to waste time, Hiei quickly proved that he now controlled the black dragon that had taken his arm earlier and used the attack on the man only to have him turn the dragon around to attack its wielder. Hiei was swallowed by his own attack, but this only led to him becoming one with the dragon and even stronger than before. He won, but the battle tired him out and he collapsed afterward. Kuwabara defeated the elder Toguro, and Yuusuke eventually defeated the younger, allowing Urameshi’s team to win the tournament. Their prize for winning was to have their wish granted, and Master Genkai was promptly brought back to life.

With the tournament complete, the four returned to what they’d been doing before, but it wasn’t long before they were interrupted and Yuusuke was supposedly kidnapped. Hiei agreed to help get him back only if Reikai would leave him be from then on. But this kidnapping was a ruse on Genkai’s part, to prove that their victory in the tournament meant little and that more frightening enemies were already in the process of opening a portal from Ningenkai into the Makai, allowing demons of all classes to enter into the human world and wreak havoc.

Hiei refused to help them, saying he didn’t mind being able to return to the Makai, though Yuusuke was sure he would arrive to help them when they needed him. He did just that when one of the enemies, Sniper, had Yuusuke cornered. Hiei appeared out of nowhere to drag him out of trouble and kill the Sniper. He then proceeded to mock Yuusuke, and the two of them got into an anger driven fist fight. When they’d finished, Hiei asked how it felt to cool off a bit, and Yuusuke realized the fight had been to let him release the anger and frustration that was making him lose his concentration. He talked Hiei into coming with him to save Kuwabara by saying he’d get a forbidden video tape that Hiei had been after of which their enemy was in possession.

The fire demon recognized his uselessness in the trials that were set up for them and sat at the sidelines until they’d found their way to Sensui, the former reikai tantei who was behind the growing portal. Hiei, Kurama, and Kuwabara were trapped in another dimension and forced to watch as Sensui and Yuusuke fought one on one. When they realized Yuusuke was going to sacrifice himself, they finally succeeded in breaking out, but they were too late. Sensui had killed Yuusuke. Hiei and Kurama said nothing, immediately increasing in power to Class A demons in their fury. Hiei summoned the Jaou Ensatsu Kokuryuuha to push Sensui into the completed portal, and he followed behind without hesitation.

Abilities/Additional Notes: Hiei is extremely fast, both with his feet and with his hands. He always carries a katana with him, and he is quite skilled with it, having had to rely on it when he’d lost his power after the jagan implant. His jagan, his third eye situated on his forehead, allows him to find things from great distances and possibly read people’s minds to an extent, or at least get an idea of their nature.

He has mastered the Jaou Ensatsu Kokuryuuha and its incredibly destructive power and wears wrappings around his right arm to hide the black dragon tattoo that resides there as well as seal the power it exudes. He can also summon flames from the human realm which aren’t quite as powerful, a sword of flames which he doesn’t use often because it’s similar to Kuwabara’s techniques, and flames around his hands which he then utilizes in a swift onslaught of punches.
